Theory of writing

Writing to me is communication and the delivery of information. Before this course, I understood writing mainly as a tool for the dissemination of ideas. But now through this course, I have come to understand that writing is also important in making content comprehensible, not just language-wise, but also in the organization, presentation, and modification of concepts as well as relating to different audiences. This course has enlightened me to consider writing as a powerful tool of clarity and connection.

My writing process has also become more organized and meaningful. I usually begin with a brainstorm, followed by the construction of a to-do list, and then I form specific goals for every stage of the assignment. This format aids me in focusing and planning better, especially when handling difficult assignments.

Over the semester, I’ve learned several key concepts that have shaped my writing. I’ve been able to hone in on research, technical description, and presenting ideas and proposals in an efficient manner. I also got to understand how to efficiently utilize Canva and CUNY Academic Commons to visually and digitally enhance my work. These resources helped me see beyond words and consider how layout and design impact communication.

The two projects in my portfolio that best demonstrate my progress are my technical description of a CPU and my technical innovation proposal to increase the health of soil on New York farms. The CPU description enabled me to practice concision and clarity, while the innovation proposal compelled me to tailor my thoughts for a targeted location and audience. That innovation proposal was especially difficult since it meant taking a broad topic and cutting it down to something practical and applicable to a real situation.

Learning from the challenges I faced, especially the innovation proposal, I understood that focus, research, and revision are ingredients of good writing. I learned that writing is not just putting words on paper; it’s shaping those words to perform a purpose and convey meaning effectively to people.

In the future, my theory of writing will stick with me. It explains my growth and gives me a template for other writing projects in college, the working world, and even non-academic pursuits. Writing is not just a talent, it’s a thought process, an organization process, and a means of expressing oneself to others.
